Aim : Listen for detailed information.

Teaching aids : The white board, tape, student book and workbook.

Warm-up : What sort of books do you like to read?

Do you like detective stories?

S. B. EX. 1: Check your vocabulary:
ì Read the sentences aloud, or ask five students to do this.
ì Draw
the students' attention to the words in bold. Ask them if they know the
meaning of these words. If any of them do, ask them to explain the
words to the class. Otherwise, let them look them up in their
dictionary.
S. B. EX. 2: Listen and choose the answer:
ì Ask
the students to look at the pictures. Explain that the man with the
quill pen is Charles Dickens, a famous writer, and that the other people
shown are characters in his books.
ì Tell
students that they are going to listen to a talk about Charles Dickens.
Go through the questions with them first and point out the advice on
the yellow note. If they read the questions before they listen, they
will already have some idea of what the speaker is going to talk about
and they will know what information they have to listen out for in order
to answer the questions.
ì Play
the recording or read the tape script, and ask the students to choose
their answers. Allow them to compare in pairs before checking with the
class.
S. B. EX. 3: Listen again and choose:
ì Remind
the students again of the benefits of first carefully reading the six
statements with alternatives, before they listen again. Encourage them
to see if they can choose the correct word in any of the statements
before they hear the talk again.
ì Play the recording again or read the tape script and ask the students to choose the correct words.
ì Check answers with the class.
S. B. EX. 4: Discuss in pairs:
ì Put the students into pairs and ask them to discuss the question.
ì Go round the class, monitoring and helping with vocabulary.
ì Ask any confident students to talk to the class about their reading habits.

W. B. EX. 1: Correct the facts in these sentences:
ì Remind the students of the talk they listened to about Charles Dickens.
Tell them that the mistakes in the sentences are all factual mistakes.
ì Give them a few minutes to decide what the mistakes are and what the
correct information should be. You might like to point out that there are two mistakes in one of the sentences.
ì Allow the students to compare their answers in pairs or small groups before checking with the class.
W. B. EX. 2: Match the words a-e with their meanings 1-5:
ì Ask the students to work individually to match the words and meanings.
ì Check answers with the class.
W. B. EX. 3: Complete these sentences with words from ex 2:
ì Ask the students to work individually to complete the sentences.
ì Allow them to compare their sentences in pairs before checking answers with the class.
Homework : Ss answer W. B. EX 3 as homework.
