Creative way to introduce new vocabulary?

First, I present the new vocabulary by showing it in written
form. I ask for volunteers to share what they may already
know about each vocabulary word. My classes are small, so
whole group works well. If I had a large class, I would have
the students work in pairs or groups of four with a Kagan
Cooperative Learning structure.

Second, I put the word cards in a pocket chart, pass out
pictures printed off the internet to pairs or groups and ask
them to decide which word they would associate with the
picture. They then place the picture in the pocket chart next
to the word and justify their choice. Often, there is more
than one possibility, which leads to great discussions.

The next day, I review the new vocabulary with a Kagan "Give
one, get one," "Quiz-quiz-trade" or some other quick review
structure. I then pair or group the students and give them
associated words written on smaller cards. They work together

to decide which vocabulary words are best associated with the
words on their cards and present their choices by placing the
cards in the pocket chart and justifying.

The pocket chart with associated words and pictures is very
effective in helping students make associations that will
allow them to understand and retain the new words.

Another way to develop vocabulary is to make Frayer Model
graphic organizers for each new word.

There are so many activities to help students remember new
vocabulary. One favorite of my students is a 10,000 Pyramid-
style quiz. Pair up the students facing each other. On the
board, draw a pyramid divided into six sections, three on the
bottom (50 pts), two in the middle (100 pts), and one on top
(200 pts). Put a piece of paper with the vocabulary word and
a picture (picture is important for cueing the meaning and
supporting ELLs) in each section. The students then give
clues to their partner, who tries to guess each word.
