Bueno Brothers' Bean Dip

Materials:
empty coffee can or
similarly lidded container, fine-line permanent marker, large dried lima
beans, a scoop like the kind that comes in powered drink cans, white
construction paper, colored marking pens, laminating materials or clear
contact paper, a timer, a dictionary
Construction:
1. Construct
a label to fit around your can with the title of the activity on the
white construction paper. Make it colorful and add any illustrations
that are applicable. Laminate the label for durability.
2. Attach the label to the can with glue or rubber cement.
3. With
the fine-line permanent marker, print a letter of the alphabet on each
lima bean. I make two of every consonant with additional beans for the
letters S, T, L, M, and N. I make four or five beans for every vowel.
4. Place the beans in the can.
5. Place the scoop in the can and put the lid on it.
Your center is now ready to use.
How to Use:

Students work in pairs or a small group. You might like to try this with an entire class.
Students will need paper and a writing utensil.
Shake the can, remove the lid and the scoop.
With the scoop, remove some beans from the can.
Spread the beans on the desk or
table. If you are using this activity with the entire class, you might
want to write the letter selections on the chalkboard.
Set the timer.
Try to form as many words as possible from the letters on the beans in the allotted time.
Check your spelling with a dictionary.
Award one point for every correctly spelled word.
Give the winner a small prize or bonus points on an upcoming Spelling test
